29 years of design for the tourist and heritage sector
Taking its name from the unusual multi-coloured bedrock of the Lizard Peninsula, Serpentine Design was founded in 1986, initially supplying copywriting and design for national computer magazines and software publishers. Gradually we established a local, loyal, client base which included the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, the Tresco Estate and Cornwall Tourist Board, as well as many small businesses, schools and libraries.
For nearly two decades, from 1990 until 2008, we produced holiday accommodation guides for Kerrier, Caradon and North Cornwall district councils, the Dartmoor Tourist Association, as well as the annual 132-page Inspirational Cornwall holiday guide for the Cornwall Tourist Board (later, Visit Cornwall).
From 1997 we also researched, wrote and designed a series of lavishly-illustrated walks books for the Lizard Peninsula, West Cornwall and Plymouth, published by Cornwall Council (some of which are now on their second or third reprints). In 2007 the success of these publications led to a contract from the National Trust to rewrite and redesign new versions of the popular Coast of Cornwall and Coast of Devon walks leaflets, as well as producing an increasing number of countryside interpretation displays.
Whilst our main clients continue to be the National Trust, Natural England and Cornwall Council, we continue to work for local holiday cottage agencies and tourism groups, as well as local publishers. We have also published our own bestselling Guide to Cornish Fish available throughout the region, as well as an equally successful children's book set in Cornwall, Percy Pengelly and the Wibble Wobble, written by Jenny Steele Scolding and beautifully illustrated by Andy McPherson.
